Harris Theatrical Enterprises, Inc. regarding the theatrical production of ‘The Cocoanuts,’ in which the parties desire “to extend the period of this agreement for an additional theatrical season…of 1927–1928…and to continue for and during the life of the dramatico-musical season. That in lieu of the compensation provided for in the aforesaid agreement dated the 5th day of December, 1924, the Manager agrees to pay to the Marx Brothers and the Marx Brothers agree to accept the sum equivalent to fifteen perfect (15%) of the gross weekly box office receipts derived from the performance and representation of…’The Cocoanuts,’ accompanied by true and accurate statements showing the receipts of every performance given by said Marx Brothers” and “an amount equivalent to fifty percent (50%) of the net profits derived from the business of performing and representing…’The Cocoanuts’ with the Marx Brothers rendering services in said play for and during the period of the theatrical season of 1927–1928…It is agreed that the compensation of the Marx Brothers, pursuant to this agreement, shall be subject to no minimum guarantee, and that in the event of Herbert Marx refusing to comply with this agreement, the compensation to be paid to the remaining Marx Brothers shall be reduced by $250.00, and, also, in the event of any of the other Marx Brothers shall be reduced by one-third of the difference between their compensation, as herein provided, and the sum of $250.00.” Contract is housed in the original blue legal folder. In fine condition, with a light central vertical fold, passing through the first letters of each signature, light creasing, and a pencil notation of their stage names on the front cover of the folder.

The Cocoanuts was an Irving Berlin musical written for the Marx Brothers following the Broadway success of their I’ll Say She Is. It takes place during the Florida land boom, with Groucho (Julius Marx) as the quintessential con-man assisted by Chico (Leo Marx), Harpo (Arthur Marx) and Zeppo (Herbert Marx). The Broadway run opened in 1925 at the Lyric Theater, after which the brothers took the show on tour during the summer of 1926. The musical closed in August, after which they signed this contract. A brief Broadway revival played at the Century Theater in May of 1927. In 1929, Paramount Pictures made The Cocoanuts into the Marx Brothers’ first film.

Negotiations didn’t always go smoothly between producer Sam Harris and the Marx brothers. Before The Cocoanuts opened on Broadway, Harris went into their dressing room for a discussion; a few minutes later, his clothes were thrown out the door, and Harris then emerged stark naked. “I guess you better handle it,” he said to the directors. A fantastic document pertaining to the show that would make the quartet national stars, signed with their seldom-seen real names. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.

RR Autograph Auctions Beatrix Potter British author and illustrator

British author and illustrator (1866–1943) whose Edwardian-era tales of naughty rabbits, ‘bad’ mice, and other amusingly mischievous animals take a place among the most enduring and beloved works in the annals of children’s literature. Her first and best-known book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, has sold more than 40 million copies since it was first published in 1902. ALS, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 3.75 x 6, January 21, 1912. Letter to a young admirer. In full: “You have written me such a dear little letter about Fluffy. I feel quite sad to disappoint you-I have begun another book about the fox! If I can do another book that Fluffy can come in to—I promise to remember him and ask for his picture again. You don’t know what heaps of letters I get from all over the world, and so many of them want a book about some special animal. There was a letter recently from a child in Wales who wants a book about a crocodile called Amelia! That I cannot stand! Then there is a small boy in Ireland who wants to know if Jeremy Fisher ever got married. And two want moles, & another wants a donkey named Salome, & another wants a horse book, and another wants hens, & another wants elephants—poor Miss Potter!

Fluffy must have surprised the guests at tea at that hotel! I can imagine him going from table to table and dropping dead. Peter Rabbit was rather clever at tricks, but he would never do any trick that required patience, like dying or begging quietly. He would jump through a hoop, or do a complicated set of backwards and forwards jumps, but he never would sit up properly still. He played the tambourine very grand, both scuffling on it with his claws and shaking the bells. But he was not such a character as Bounce (or Benjamin Bouncer). My last rabbit was called Joseph, he lived to be 9 or 10; I don’t intend to get another; I was always expecting Kep to kill him! I was rather thankful poor Joseph died peacefully. I have cocks and hens at present. I remain dear Phyllis ys aff.” In very good condition, with three horizontal folds, a few light corner creases, a few small spots (including two next to signature), and light toning and soiling, a bit heavier to last page.

Potter’s letters to children often included stories she had invented and anecdotes about her pets. In this wonderful 1912 letter, she mentions her latest book “about a fox,” referring to The Tale of Mr. Tod, a children’s book about a badger named Tommy Brock and his fox neighbor, Mr. Tod. Potter found inspiration for her work in the country setting of her beloved Castle Farm in the English Lakes District and the story is set in the farm’s fields. She also mentions other books in the letter, including the tales of Peter Rabbit and Mr. Jeremy Fisher. Potter letters of this kind and content are rarely offered, and her wonderful description of her greatest character, Peter Rabbit, make this especially desirable. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.

RR Autograph Auctions Apollo 15 Flown Lunar Module Stowage Bag

Large Apollo 15 lunar module stowage bag, used for the temporary storage of lunar samples and soiled with lunar dust from the Hadley-rille region of the moon. Beta cloth bag measures approximately 29 x 18.5. Bag has a two-zipper large storage compartment which is soiled inside with lunar dust. Smaller compartments on the outside are labeled “PGA Drink Bags,” “Temp Stow Bag,” and “Utility Light.” Each zippered compartment is covered with a Velcro flap. Bag also has four brown adjustable brown straps with a clip at each end. Bag also has two solid metal clips. There are two tags attached to one of the loops. The first is a yellow parts removal tag from the Space Division, North American Rockwell Corporation, filled in by an employee identifying the model number V36-3, Stowage Bag (LM) and dated October 13, 1971, and a smaller handwritten label which reads, “Lunar Module Storage Bag Apollo 15, P.N. NPL; White, large, dirty. Transfer.”

Accompanied by a January 22, 1996 letter from a staff agent of the Mascoutah Aerospace Museum, which reads, in part: “I am transferring to you, the large flown Apollo 15 Lunar Module stowage bag. This Lunar Module bag was part of a larger collection of flown Apollo artifacts, acquired by the Mascoutah Aerospace Museum. This flown Apollo 15 beta material bag can be identified in the following ways:

On the back panel is a faint Smithsonian ‘NASM’ ink inventory stamp…It is also marked with a large yellow parts removal tag…It is identified with the ‘Removal Number #769,’…this is then followed by Several Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum inventory stamps, inspection numbers and finally dated “10/13/71”…The Apollo 15 crew used this large bag to return ‘excessive’ quantities of lunar samples. This bag was originally to be left on the lunar surface with the whole host of other items marked for disposal. This bag was then stored in the Lunar Module, transferred to the Command Module and then returned back to earth with those ‘excessive’ amounts of lunar samples.”

This large, LM temporary stowage bag represents a rare opportunity to own a complete and important lunar surface artifact. Flown items from any moon mission are highly desirable, but lunar surface items of this size and quality that have been soiled from exposure to lunar dust even more so. Owning any stand-alone moon rock or fragment is illegal, making this bag and its trace amounts of lunar soiling from the Hadley-rille region as close to owning a moon rock as possible. RRAuction COA.

RR Autograph Auction Robert E. and Mary Custis Lee

Original sepia 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo, by the “’Lee’ Photographic Gallery,” boldly signed on the image in black ink, “R. E. Lee.” Reverse is signed and inscribed “Thos Launens Jones from his friend Mary Custis Lee.” Photographer’s imprint on the reverse reads, “The ‘Lee’ Photographic Gallery, 920 Main Street, over the Richmond Musical Exchange. Wm. W. Davies.” Some light scuffing and surface marks to bottom border, a few surface marks and light silvering to image, and blocks of toning to reverse, otherwise fine condition; and an original carte-de-visite of Mary Curtis Lee by Boude and Miley of Lexington, Virginia, signed in the lower border “M C Lee,” and also signed and inscribed on the reverse, “For my kind though unknown friend T. L. Jones, M C Lee.” In very good condition, with fading and toning to image, lightly trimmed top edge, and toning and mounting remnants to reverse.

Known as the ‘floppy tie’ portrait, it was taken in 1864 by John W. Davies in the Lee Gallery. Edward D. C. Campbell, Jr., in his article ‘The Fabric of Command: R. E. Lee, Confederate Insignia, and the Perception of Rank’ published in The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography (Vol. 98 No. 2, April 1990), wrote that Davies ‘made a single image. The picture was, in fact, a favorite of General Lee and is easily recognized by Lee’s closely cropped beard, ill-fitting collar, and drooping black tie.’ Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.

RR Autograph Auctions Gordon Cooper Original Cooper suit portrait by NASA employee Ron Woods

Artist who was formally a NASA suit technician supporting the early shuttle missions. During the Apollo program Woods worked for ILC as a suit technician performing suit maintenance, interface testing with the Command Module, Lunar Module, and Lunar Rover vehicles, and insertion of astronauts in Command and Lunar modules for training. He suited crewmembers for Apollo 8, 11, 15, all Skylab missions, and Apollo Soyuz. He also assisted engineering in the development of the Shuttle suit components. Since 1982, he has worked in the Flight Crew Systems Facility at KSC with responsibilities in processing flight hardware for the Space Shuttle Crew module and payload bay. This includes pre-flight testing of hardware and post-flight testing. Equipment includes EVA and Launch/Entry suits, camera equipment, food, clothing, flight data files, contingency tools, and mission specific tools for Hubble upgrades. An amazingly beautiful original watercolor painting of Gordon Cooper’s Mercury spacesuit, showing a light reflection of Alan Shepard, on a 10 x 13 sheet of Arches, 140 lb. cold press paper. The wonderfully detailed image shows Cooper’s flight suit, complete with gloves, with the name tag and NASA ‘meatball’ logo visible, with the helmet hanging off the suit’s right arm. Signed in the lower right in pencil, “Ron Woods 2010.” In fine condition, with just some slight rippling to bottom edge. According to Woods, the painting is based on reference photographs of Cooper’s suit at the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Center. He can offer no definitive explanation for how the reflection of Shepard got into the photos, as the angles did not match up. Woods also states that the painting was done using a magnifier to ensure each accurate detail to the suit. A scarce opportunity to own an original piece from an artist who enjoyed a unique inside perspective. RRAuction COA.

RR Autograph Auction Charles Lindbergh Stately portrait

Vintage matte-finish 8 x 11 photo, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To George Wingay, With best wishes, Charles A. Lindbergh, June 3, 1927.” Photo is affixed to its original slightly larger mount and grandly suede matted and framed with a .5 x .5 swatch of fabric from the Spirit of St. Louis, four photos of Lindbergh, and two name plaques to an overall size of 39.25 x 35.5. In fine condition, with small stain to background, a bit of scattered light silvering, and photographer’s notations to lower border.

This bold image was signed just days after the successful completion of Lindbergh’s 33.5 hour flight to Paris, a journey that claimed the lives of six brave pilots before him. His ‘partner,’ The Spirit of St. Louis, was nothing more than a single-engine, single-seat, high-wing monoplane covered in fabric. Together, they braved tumultuous conditions and times of such impaired vision that they were guided only by the barely visible stars. After a miraculous landing in Paris, Lindbergh and the plane were overcome by an overjoyed mob of spectators, both barely emerging, with a bit of damage done to the fabric covering the plane’s fuselage. This original swatch is exceedingly scarce and incredibly desirable, providing a tangible piece of history from one of aviation’s most lauded flights. Oversized. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
